Mexico vs Honduras: International Friendly Preview, Live Stream & Where To Watch
Mexico and Honduras will collide in an international friendly match on Wednesday at the NRG Stadium in Houston as part of their preparation for the upcoming 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Mexico, who are considered one of the favorites to win the Gold Cup this year, have been struggling as of late. They failed to get past the group stage of the 2015 Copa America after losing to Ecuador and settling for draw against Bolivia and Chile in their group.
Following their disappointing stint in the Copa America in Chile, Mexico also settled for a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in a friendly on June 25. Based on what he saw from the Mexican squad, Honduras coach Jorge Luis Pinto said Mexico showed a lot of weaknesses.
"You have to be frank, and I see a team that is unbalanced," Pinto said. "I saw the video of Costa Rica against Mexico, and in parts, the team wasn't balanced. They have forwards up front that are tricky."
Mexico coach Miguel Herrera seemed to have noticed that weakness as well because he is planning to use a different formation against Honduras -- from their usual 5-3-2 to 4-4-2 formation.
"I don't have doubts about the 5-3-2, but we have to try the 4-4-2. It seems a lot of people like it," Herrera said in a news conference, confirming the change in formation.
Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez will start up top for Mexico against Honduras, while Guillermo Ochoa will man the goal for them. Their four-man back line will be composed of left back Miguel Layun, right back Paul Aguilar, center backs Maza Rodriguez and Diego Reyes.
Hector Herrera, Andres Guardado, Jose Juan Vazquez and Carlos Esquivel will man the midfield.
Herrera said, though, that there could still be changes when the Gold Cup starts, especially after defender Hector Moreno went down with an injury.
"I still don't have it," Herrera said when asked about his Gold Cup lineup. "It will be defined in the next few days."
