Windows 10 Release News: Not All Users to Receive Update on July 29
Microsoft will reward its most loyal users with the earliest upgrade to the new Windows 10. The users who have helped provide feedback on the upcoming operating system will receive the full version the quickest, according to CNET.
The Windows Insider Program has allowed Microsoft to collect feedback on the test versions of Windows 10 since last October. Users of the Windows Insider Program will be first in line to receive the upgrade to Windows 10.
According to Gotta Be Mobile, Windows Insider Program members will receive a notification on their desktop on July 29 telling them that their upgrade is ready to be downloaded and installed.
In a blog post from Thursday, Microsoft's executive VP of Operating Systems Terry Myerson explained how Windows 10 will be distributed.
"Starting on July 29, we will start rolling out Windows 10 to our Windows Insiders," Myerson said.
Windows 10 will be a free download to all computer owners that are currently using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Microsoft is pushing out invitations to these computer owners to make a reservation.
Those who have reserved their spot to upgrade to Windows 10 would be next in line.
"From there, we will start notifying reserved systems in waves, slowly scaling up after July 29th," Myerson said. "Each day of the roll-out, we will listen, learn and update the experience for all Windows 10 users. If you reserved your copy of Windows 10, we will notify you once our compatibility work confirms you will have a great experience, and Windows 10 has been downloaded on your system."
Microsoft will ensure that Windows 10 is ready to go and is free of errors before pushing it out further. This means that some users will get their upgrade after the July 29 release date.
The update will be sent out in waves based on priority determined by Microsoft.
Microsoft is anticipating that there could be some errors involved with the new operating system and does not want to overload servers by making it available to all users on July 29, which is likely why they are releasing it this way.
"We've been really pleased with the strong response to Windows 10 since we kicked off reservations in early June, with millions of reservations," Myserson said. "We want to make sure all of you have a great upgrade experience, so we'll roll-out Windows 10 in phases to help manage the demand."
