Chevy Features: Carmaker Will Add a Special Cooling System for Smartphones
Chevrolet wants users to keep their smartphones cool and charged. The carmaker will not only offer wireless charging in some of their cars but also a cooling system designed for smartphones, according to CNet.
The Chevy Active Phone Cooling system will act like a personal air conditioning system for a user's smartphone. It is a cold air vent that keeps the smartphone cool while it sits in a tray below the dashboard. The system is designed to keep smartphones lasting longer and improve battery life and performance.
"Over time, regular overheating can do permanent damage to the lithium ion batteries that power our smartphones. I always recommend keeping your phone in a cool, ventilated place, where it can stay at a comfortable room temperature, whether it's charging or discharging," Jeffrey Van Camp, deputy editor of Digital Trends said.
The cooling system is connected to the car's normal air conditioning and ventilation system. Chevy says they are the first company in the industry to create this sort of technology.
The cars that will feature the cooling system will all be 2016 models, including the Impala, Malibu, Volt and Cruze. These cars also feature a wireless charging system.
Users will be able to keep their phones in the tray to play music and talk on with handsfree technology. While in the tray it will be charging and keeping cool.
The wireless in-car charging system is powered by the wireless-charging technology from Powermat. Some smartphones are compatible with Powermat, but others will need a special back plate or add-on to make them compatible with the wireless charging feature.
Engineers noticed that some phones would shut themselves off when they were charging and became too hot. Noticing this, Chevy went to work on the smartphone cooling system, according to a press release from the company.
