Disney's 'Descendants' Stars Colombian-American Actress Sofia Carson as 'Evie' the Daughter of the Evil Queen [VIDEO]
It's not easy being a descendant of a Disney villain, who thrives on evil, malice and domination over the kingdom, but that doesn't mean you have to grow up to be like your parents. Good can overcome evil.
These are a few of the many lessons that the kids of Disney villains -- Maleficent, the Evil Queen, along with Cruella de Vil and Jafar -- learn in the Disney Channel's original movie, "Descendants."
On July 31st, Disney Channel will debut its "epic live-action adventure comedy" that gives an inside look at what life is like for teenage kids of some of Disney's most infamous villains.
"We are not our parents. We can choose who we want to be," said by the "Descendants" in the film's official trailer.
Helmed by Emmy Award-winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega (known for the popular musical franchise "High School Musical") the film is fun, playful and driven by song and dance.
Disney's "Descendants" delves into the young and conflicted lives of Mal (Dove Cameron), Evie (Sofia Carson), Carlos (Cameron Boyce) and Jay (Booboo Stewart), the teenage descendants of Disney's villains - Maleficent (Kristin Chenoweth), the Evil Queen (Kathy Najimy), Cruella de Vil (Wendy Raquel Robinson) and Jafar (Maz Jobrani).
While, in the film, it has been two decades since all villains have been imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost, the teens encounter obstacles "in living up to parental and peer expectations," as Disney Channel described it.
On one hand, the kids are pressured to carry on their parents' evil legacies. But on the other hand, the villainy-born teens realize they can determine their own fate and choose the path to good or evil.
In the film, Disney highlights "a young Latina role-model for women of all ages," played by Sofia Carson (Evie), who is of Colombian decent.
"Sofia is the complete package with her beauty, smarts and skills having starred in other hit series as well as having worked with acclaimed music producers on her singer/songwriter career," according to her bio.
Carson teamed up with fellow actors/singers Shawn Mendes, Dove Cameron for a new music video "Believe" for the film.
It turns out that this Latina Disney teen villain not only has the beauty, but the brains too. And she isn't solely relying on acting, but stresses education as well. The Fort Lauderdale, FL native is fluent in Spanish, English and French and is currently completing her undergraduate degree at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)."
