2014 Winter Olympics US Team Uniforms: Ralph Lauren Getting Harsh Feedback for 'Tacky' National Uniform [See Here]
TEAM USA has unveiled its Olympic Uniform on Thursday and it's been met with some harsh criticism.
According to Yahoo! Sports, the uniforms were designed by fashion label Ralph Lauren and will be worn for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Team USA previewed the uniforms at the Today Show by some of the Olympic athletes themselves - American curlers Jessica Schultz, 29, and Jared Zezel, 22, both from Minnesota were joined by Today anchors, and Ralph Lauren's David Lauren for the big reveal. To see the photos and video, click here.
Social media became restless as critics ripped apart he patchwork woolen cardigans of stars and stripes. Fashion house Lauren said it was a "meticulously knit patchwork cardigan highlighted with artisan details and emblazoned with stars and spirited graphics." American tradition was the inspiration for the uniform said Lauren's son David.
It was also emphasized by the designer that the uniforms were produced entirely in the United States. This move to manufacture locally stems from the negative reaction of critics on the move to outsource manufacturing of the US gear for the 2012 London Olympics in China.
However, locally made products don't come cheap. Bloomberg reports the sweaters alone are sold for a jaw-dropping $598 while a single belt retails for $75. Thankfully, the other items in the collection are more affordable.
Supporters can purchase the limited-edition uniform at Ralph Lauren as well as the official retail website of Team USA. All proceeds from the sales of the cardigan will go to the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Comments found on various social media network complained about the tackiness and old-style of the uniforms. CBS Sports made a similar remark saying, "It's almost like an ugly Christmas sweater vest mixed with some yoga pants."
"The sweater is a 'patchwork' in the true sense of the word to make a collage that represents the American athletes who each have their own unique story to tell," said the company in its release
This is the fourth time that Ralph Lauren has designed Team USA's uniforms.
