World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman made it easier for the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight to decide what to do next after the match.

Sulaiman declared that whoever triumphs in the highly-anticipated clash between the WBC middleweight title holder, Cotto, and the former super welterweight champion, Alvarez, should face the WBC middleweight title mandatory challenger, Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.

Failing to do so by the last man standing in the Cotto-Canelo bout will earn the International Boxing Organization and World Boxing Association middleweight champion another feather in his cap, which is the WBC middleweight title itself.

"The winner of Cotto v Alvarez has to fight Gennady Golovkin as that is the WBC ruling. If that doesn't happen then Golovkin moves from interim to undisputed champion," Sulaiman told World Boxing News.

The unbeaten Kazakh, who collected 30 of his 33 wins via knockout, a stunning 91 percent KO rate, was announced as the WBC interim middleweight champion when he demolished the previous holder, Marco Antonio Rubio, via a 2nd round KO during their fight in October, ESPN reported.

This move by the WBC to hail "GGG" as the interim champion was already an "unusual move" by the organization as the 33-year-old fighter already holds the current WBA middleweight title, noted SportNews24.com. These boxing institutions, which sanction official matches, do not commonly "let world champions become challengers for other world titles" but for the boxing rising star, Triple G, "WBC made an exception," the site added.

In fact, Golovkin's role in the materialization of the Cotto-Canelo showdown is very important. If Golovkin chooses, he can even put a stop to the upcoming fight between Cotto and the Mexican favorite, being the mandatory challenger set by the sanctioning body.

Although negotiations with both parties are ongoing, the Kazakh superstar's official consent may still be needed, according to Sulaiman's statements.

"The WBC is doing everything we can to have this fight done. It requires Gennady Golovkin's acceptance, but the ruling and everything seems possible that the fight will materialize," Sulaiman said.

However, it seems everything will still be in order, which means "GGG" will give the go signal, and the fight will take place this fall.

"I believe that (November) is the case and it is just a natural fight and a great fight between two rivals that can enhance boxing. We have been addressing this for a couple of months and it seems that we are very close to a final agreement, so I am very positive," added Sulaiman.

Thus, Golovkin will just have to wait four months more to officially know the winner who will either defend his title to face him in another intense match or decide to vacate the position to give him the championship just to avoid him.
