A Mexican Navy Black Hawk helicopter was attacked during a shootout on Sunday.

Gang members opened fire on the military chopper in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas.

VICE is reporting the incident between the Black Hawk helicopter and the Zetas cartel happened Sunday morning. The Black Hawk was patrolling the rural area of the state, which is controlled by the Zetas cartel and is close to the U.S. border.

When the helicopter noticed a convoy carrying armed men, the individuals open fire on the Black Hawk. The Mexican Navy troops responded with gunfire, killing six of the cartel members.

This isn't the first time that a drug cartel has open fire on a military aircraft in Mexico. On May 1, members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel used a rocket-propelled grenade to take down another military helicopter.

On June 5, a helicopter belonging to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency had to make an emergency landing after being shot from the Mexican side of the border.

Authorities have already seized four vehicles of the convoy and have recovered six of the weapons used in the gunfight, according to Excelsior.

EFE reports the navy troops fired a warning shot to stop the assailants, but it was ignored. Minutes later, the firefight ended with six cartel members dead.

Tamaulipas has been a battleground between the Gulf and Los Zetas drug cartels for years, and it is regularly among the states with the highest number of homicides.

President Enrique Peña Nieto sent additional federal police and military personnel to Tamaulipas in May 2014 and ordered a thorough vetting of the state and municipal police forces to root out corrupt officers.
