T-Mobile Phones, Plans & Unlimited Coverage 2015: Carrier Improving Services for Customers to Remain Competitive
T-Mobile will soon allow customers to use their phones for free in Mexico and Canada, according to CNet. The new feature will also allow customers to call Mexico and Canada without any additional fees.
Starting July 15, no roaming charges will be added to T-Mobile customers' bills when they travel to Canada and Mexico and use their phones. This includes making calls, sending text messages and using the Internet on their phones.
T-Mobile is adding this feature as part of their "Uncarrier Amped" campaign. T-Mobile is the fourth-largest wireless carrier in the U.S. and like the other three, T-Mobile is making changes to its wireless plans to lure in new customers.
Last month, T-Mobile announced a plan that will allow customers to upgrade their phone up to three times per year. This is an update to their Jump program that allowed customers to upgrade to a new phone after 12 months, but it also required a $10 per month fee.
The other three wireless carriers are also making efforts to keep their customers and recruit new ones. Sprint, the No. 3 carrier, has been using aggressive marketing and AT&T and Verizon have made some changes to their plans as well.
T-Mobile's customer-friendly plans have paid off for the company. Thursday, the company announced that it added 2.1 million customers in the second quarter of this year.
The new program that allows customers to use their phones in Mexico and Canada without charging roaming fees is part of T-Mobile's "Mobile Without Borders" program. This program has been expanded since T-Mobile offered free international unlimited data and text messages, but at a 2G speed.
The Mexico and Canada program will allow customers the fastest data connection available in both countries. T-Mobile formed a partnership with carriers in Mexico and Canada to provide the roaming. Customers will have access to their entire data plan when roaming in these countries.
"International roaming and calling has been a significant revenue generator for all carriers, but T-Mobile is ushering in a new paradigm," Lynnette Luna, an analyst at Current Analysis, said.
T-Mobile will have to pay roaming fees to its partners in Mexico and Canada, but they hope it will help increase customer loyalty.
According to Gizmodo, when customers travel to Canada or Mexico, their phone will display a different carrier on the screen, but they will still be enjoying their T-Mobile benefits and not be charged roaming fees.
