'FlatOut' Release Date & Gameplay: New Destruction-Themed PS4, Xbox One, PC Game Announced in the Works
A new serving of "FlatOut," a demolition derby-style racing game, is set to come out next year. Publisher Strategy First has announced that the company will be releasing the next entry in the "FlatOut" series in 2016. It is currently being developed for the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
According to the publisher's press release, the upcoming game is the "most ambitious title in the franchise's history." In order to ensure that the game is a success, Strategy First called for numerous developers to make offers to create the game before finally deciding to partner with Kylotonn Entertainment.
Strategy First director Emanuel Wall said "FlatOut is our most important franchise. There is a strong vocal community that have numerous constructive ideas and suggestions on what they would like to experience in an all new FlatOut."
Strategy First and Kylotonn have plans to get gamers and fans involved in the creative process of developing the game, and intends for the game to deliver new experiences to its fans. However, exact details regarding the game are yet to be released at the moment.
Kylotonn is best known for developing "Iron Storm" in 2002, the "Bet on Soldier" series from 2005 to 2006 and "The Cursed Crusade" in 2011, all of which received either mixed or predominantly negative reception from review outlets. "The Cursed Crusade" in particular was panned, receiving a 39 for its Xbox 360 version on review aggregator Metacritic.
Including games from all platforms as well as spin-offs, the upcoming "FlatOut" game will be the seventh in the series. BugBear Entertainment developed the first four games: "FlatOut" in 2004, "FlatOut 2" in 2006, "Flat:Out Ultimate Carnage" in 2007 and the PSP game "FlatOut: Head On" in 2008. The next two games in the series were "FlatOut" for Wii in 2010, developed by Zoo Games, and "FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction" in 2011, developed by Team6 Game Studios, GameSpot noted.
The announcement of the next game comes almost four years after the release of the most recent game, "FlatOut 3: Chaos & Destruction." Whereas other games in the series were praised for their fun mechanics and gameplay, "FlatOut 3" received negative reviews from critics. Eurogamer, in its one out of ten review, said "Flatout once burned bright, but now is gone - and if there is a driving hell, this is surely it."
With its upcoming release, Strategy First and Kylotonn will definitely be hoping to breathe some new life into the franchise. The next "FlatOut" game is expected to come out in 2016.
