Oregon Burglary Suspect Used Own Baby As Human Shield
A police investigation almost turned tragic as an Oregon man became cornered by authorities on Saturday. 25-year-old Raleigh Reynolds was arrested on a burglary charge, but will now be facing additional charges after trying to flee from authorities while using his seven-month-old son as a human shield.
Police officers in Estacada, Oregon had just made their way to Reynold's house when they noticed the suspect flee from his residence, jump a fence and barricade himself inside what turned out to be his sister's house. Backup was soon called in and authorities surrounded Reynolds on all sides.
From there, a standoff ensued as police officers were cautious in pursuing the suspect in an unknown residence. Reports state that Reynolds came in and out of the house several times, retreating back each time upon realizing that he was surrounded. That's when he began to get desperate.
"As Raleigh came out of the house, he picked up the baby to bring him out. They were screaming at him to put him on the ground," his mother Karen Founds said. "He's a sweet, loving young man who's made some bad choices in life, that doesn't make him a bad person."
The police officers present at the scene did not see the situation play out quite the same way. Deputies were eventually able to negotiate for the baby's release, and arrested Reynolds immediately after.
"He was just standing there, telling us he didn't want to leave the baby in the house, despite the situation," said Deputy Daniel Moyer, of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. "He was holding it facing away from him and basically to conceal his head upper torso," continued Moyer. "He was holding it to shield himself from our firearms, or from, you know, trying to be taken into custody. It was scary. It was very scary."
Reynolds was booked on charges of burglary, obstructing governmental administration, endangering welfare of a minor and resisting arrest. The child was not hurt in the incident.
