NBA Free Agents 2015: Top 5 Worst Contracts & Signings Made By NBA Teams This Offseason
The offseason pretty much is a season for NBA fans. Filled with trade rumors and exciting free agent signings, there's rarely a dull moment. While the San Antonio Spurs are reloading with talent across the board, a few teams are making dumb mistakes that are setting them backwards.
Here are the five worst free agent signings of this offseason.
1. Enes Kanter- Thunder
But the Thunder let James Harden go to the Houston Rockets? Kevin Durant has one year left on his contract, while Russell Westbrook has just two years remaining. Enes Kanter is a restricted free agent, and the Portland Trailblazers decided to offer $70 million. However, just three days after that, the Oklahoma City Thunder matched the offer sheet. Kanter is very young, and he has been improving his scoring, but this is way too much. Kanter is viewed as a defensive liability, and this deal seems very high for a team that has two superstar players nearing the end of their contracts.
2. Goran Dragic- Heat
When did Goran Dragic became a superstar type player? Dragic has played for the Phoenix Suns twice, Houston Rockets and Miami Heat. Pat Riley rewarded Dragic with a five year, $90 million contract this offseason. Dragic only averages 4.5 assists per game, he's a below average free throw shooter, and he's not a reliable scorer. A max contract for Dragic is beyond explainable, especially considering he needs to improve his defense. This one is a head-scratcher.
3. Rajon Rondo- Kings
This is great for Rajon Rondo. Not so much for the Sacramento Kings. Rondo really hurt his stock last season with the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, so there was no way he was going to get a long-term deal this offseason. Not a chance after his poor attitude with coach Rick Carlisle. So, what did Rondo do? He simply bet on himself with a one year deal to prove to everyone he's still an elite point guard. If Rondo can have a great season, he'll sign elsewhere next offseason for a big contract thus leaving the Kings without a starting point guard.
4. Robin Lopez- Knicks
Robin Lopez is a pretty good player. Despite standing seven feet tall, Lopez only averages five rebounds per game for his career. He's a pretty good free throw shooter who can pass the ball pretty well, and he plays pretty good defense. Again, he's a pretty good player. The New York Knicks rewarded Lopez with a four year, $54 million contract to anchor their frontcourt. On the flip side, The Milwaukee Bucks got Greg Monroe for $50 million. Lopez won't have LaMarcus Aldridge by his side anymore.
5. Thompson and Love- Cavaliers
If you thought the Cavaliers bench was slim before, you haven't seen anything yet. The Cavaliers opened their wallets to both Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love this offseason for a combined $190 million. The Cavaliers could have chosen one or the other and saved a massive amount of cap space, while still retaining a skilled big man. They also gave Iman Shumpert another $40 million. The Cavaliers should have invested more in lower cost "role players" such as Tiago Splitter, Marco Belinelli and others like them to build more depth.
