Over 50,000 People Signed Petition To Stop Kanye West From Performing At Pan Am Closing Ceremony
Kanye West is not wanted in Toronto! An online petition shows many Canadians resent West's participation in the Panamerican Games' closing ceremony.
NME reports that the petition recently surfaced online to prevent star rapper Kanye West from performing at the closing ceremony of the Panamerican Games held in Toronto. More than 50,000 people signed the petition.
The Pan Am Games, which takes place every four years, recently announced West will be performing on July 26 via Twitter. When the news broke out, many fans weren't pleased with the decision. You can check out some of the tweets below:
The petition, which can be seen here, states: "The Toronto Pan Am games have proven to be very important for Torontonians this year and have triggered a unified sense of pride in our city. It would only be just to ask a proud Torontonian (or even a Canadian for that matter) in the music industry to perform, such as Drake, Walk Off The Earth, Feist, Metric, Shania Twain, deadmau5, Crystal Castles, Zeds Dead, The Weeknd, Peaches, K'naan, and many many more!"
"The options for Toronto artists are far from limited and choosing someone like Kanye West raises several concerns among the people. Why was a local artist or group not chosen and supported, just as our local athletes are throughout the games?" the petition continues.
Business Standard reports that petitioners would rather have local Toronto artists perform at the closing ceremonies.
This is not the first time petitioners didn't want Kanye West to perform.
A similar petition was circulating online earlier this year to prevent West from headlining the British Glastonbury Festival, in which he called himself "the greatest rockstar of all time."
As of now, 50,315 signatures have been collected.
