Top 5 Super Bowl Halftime Performances of all Time
In the early days of the Super Bowl, halftime shows were performed by college marching bands. Of course, times sure have changed since then! Here, in no particular order, are the top 5 Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.
5. New Kids on the Block: in 1991, the New Kids became the first popular music act to perform at the Super Bowl. The rousing success of their performance kicked off the idea of having popular performers strut their stuff on the Super Bowl halftime stage, a tradition which continues today as "the largest concert of the year."
4. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: this performance would turn out to be one of the last ever performances of the legendary original lineup, and they performed all of their greatest hits, including "Born to Run," "Working on a Dream," and "Tenth Avenue Freezeout."
3. Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson: this didn't make the list because of the performances, but because of "Nipplegate," which happened as an end result of Timberlake ripping off Jackson's top, exposing her pierced left nipple.
2. Beyoncé Knowles/Destiny's Child: last year's performance featuring Jay Z's wife was the second most watched halftime performance in history (Madonna's performance was the most watched). She did all of her greatest hits before being joined by Destiny's Child for a rousing rendition of "Single Ladies."
1. Prince: whenever the Purple One graces us with his presence, it's an event to end all events, and his Super Bowl performance was no different. He did all of his greats hits and some covers, and the end result was a performance that was even more exciting than the actual game.
