'Project CARS' for Wii U Cancelled, But Developers Give Hope for Nintendo NX Release
Nintendo Wii U users are in for sad news. Word is out that Slightly Mad Studios car racing simulation game, "Project CARS," will no longer arrive to the Nintendo handheld console as initially expected.
According to studio chief Ian Bell, developing the game for the Nintendo console is not easy for the company. Slightly Mad Studios has been waiting for a new hardware from the Japanese firm since E3 to enable their work to continue for the Wii U but it never arrived, which resulted to the cancellation of the title for the handheld console.
"The official line is that we're awaiting an announcement from Nintendo on new hardware," Bell told Nintendo Life. "As of now Project CARS is simply too much for the Wii U."
Before Bell announced the cancellation of the title on the Nintendo console, reports of developers experiencing a challenging time converting the title have been going around. At that time, it was only reported that the Wii U version would come out at a later date than the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
Bandai Namco, which published the title, also confirmed that the car racing video game will no longer be made for the Wii U.
"Despite much perseverance on the Wii U version of Project CARS, we will no longer be actively pursuing development on it as the quality does not meet our own high standards nor our intended vision for the title on this platform," said a spokesperson from the company to Polygon.
The statement affirmed Bell's previous comment regarding a new hardware announcement from Nintendo that never came and was part of the reason the firm did not push through with the Wii U edition of the title.
"Apologies to our Nintendo fans out there that have been waiting for further news on this," continued the Bandai Namco representative. "But have no desire to release a product that isn't at the very least comparable with our highest-rated versions on other platforms."
A Wii U version of Project CARS was not in the original plan for the title when it was pitched for crowd funding. The original pitch only listed it as a "maybe" for the developers and since then, it has not materialized to be a full-blown Wii U title.
Aside from the Wii U, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will also not be made for the title.
However, Bell hinted that the game might see the light of day in the rumored upcoming Nintendo NX console, reported Game Rant. However, no timeline has been made for the console and title as of the moment.
"Project CARS" is now available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
