James Bond 24 'Spectre' Plot & Rumors: Smartphone 'Made For Bond' To Debut in the Film?
Sony's upcoming flagship device will apparently get a huge PR boost since leaked images online suggest that its upcoming flagship smartphone will be featured in "Spectre," one of this year's most-anticipated films.
The dubious photos made rounds on Saturday. It originated from a Chinese website called Digi-Wo. Read the translated version here.
The Tech giant oversees a number of specialized business units. Two of which are Sony Mobile Communications, set to release a follow up on its Xperia series, and Sony Pictures Entertainment, which co-owns the distribution rights to "Spectre."
The latest Bond film, slated to debut in theaters in the U.S. on Nov. 6, will be Sony's final distribution commitment with the property, Variety reported in June. The film is expected to top its predecessor, "Skyfall," in the box office.
As for the leaks, the title font of "Spectre" can be seen below a phrase that read "Made for Bond" above a wording of an Xperia unit. It still remains unclear as to what Xperia unit it pertains to, as a noticeable blur precedes the number five.
Pundits guess that this character stands for the letter Z, which could mean that the upcoming device is the Xperia Z5. Sony's current flagship phone, officially named the Xperia Z3+, or Xperia Z4 to some, released earlier this year.
Sony has always been keen on its product placement in movies and what better means to showcase a new flagship phone than in a movie that stars arguably the world's most famous spy.
The Xperia Z5 could appear in the movie in a myriad of ways but will most likely end up as 007's mobile device amid creative dispute of the use of Sony devices in Bond films. Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig do not have a particular liking for Sony phones, according to The Verge, which cited leaked information retrieved by Wikileaks.
"BEYOND the $ factor, there is, as you may know, a CREATIVE factor whereby [director Sam Mendes] and Daniel [Craig] don't like the Sony phone for the film (the thinking, subjectively/objectively is that James Bond only uses the 'best,' and in their minds, the Sony phone is not the 'best')," Columbia Business Affairs Office Andrew Gumpert apparently wrote in an email.
Sony has yet to confirm nor dismiss the images, so details on the Xperia Z5 remain speculations for now.
For what it is worth, the unverified leak suggests that the Xperia Z5 will be made available this September and will employ the yet-to-be-released Snapdragon 820 chipset. It will feature a fingerprint recognition system and a 21 megapixel camera. It will also have 4GB RAM, GSM Arena figured.
