MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees, Dodgers, Giants Interested in Cole Hamels & Aroldis Chapman
MLB trade rumors are swirling around the league like wildfire.
The Kansas City Royals recently made the biggest move trading for Johnny Cueto with the Cincinnati Reds. The Toronto Blue Jays also made a somewhat shocking move to acquire Troy Tulowitzki from the Colorado Rockies.
With just three days left until the trade deadline, you can bet there will be a lot of deals taking place.
Cole Hamels has been the biggest name on the MLB hot stove. Hamels isn't having his greatest season with a 3.64 ERA, but he has very little run support from the Philadelphia Phillies offense. Hamels pitched a no-hitter in his last start against the Chicago Cubs. Hamels still has four years and more than $80 million remaining on his contract, so he comes at a pretty big price.
According to ESPN, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers are the favorites to land Hamels. The Dodgers already have a fantastic pitching staff led by Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke, but they are always looking to add more pitching depth. As good as Kershaw has been in the regular season, he hasn't proven to be a solid pitcher come postseason time. In 2008, Hamels won the World Series MVP award.
It doesn't appear as if the Yankees will make a move for Hamels, but they could in fact make a deal with the Detroit Tigers for David Price. Price is in the final year of his contract, so it may be wise for the Tigers to get value now while they still can. The Yankees rank 20th in team ERA this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if they make a move to add a starting pitcher.
Aroldis Chapman is another great pitcher who has been involved in trade rumors. The 27-year-old Cuban pitcher has successfully made the last four consecutive All-Star games for the Reds. However, it's become clear that the Reds are rebuilding and they could very well trade Chapman in the next few days. The San Francisco Giants have shown much interest in Chapman despite the fact that they have a solid closer in Santiago Casilla. Chapman is eight years younger than Casilla, and Casilla is in the final year of his contract, so this move would be for the future.
Not only have the Reds dealt away Dominican ace Johnny Cueto, and could trade closer Chapman, but they could even trade Mike Leake as well. Like many others listed above, Leake is in the final year of his contract. The Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals have each been rumored to be in contact with the Reds as possible suitors. The Cardinals have the best team ERA in all of baseball, but they need enormous depth to win the National League this season.
The MLB trade deadline is Friday, July 31 at 4 p.m. EST.
