YouTube Star Bethany Mota Lands September Cover of Latina Magazine
Social media star, Bethany Mota, revealed her shy past, being bullied and how YouTube became an outlet for dealing with anxiety in the September issue of Latina magazine.
The magazine took to social media to announce Mota, who is of Mexican, Irish and Portuguese decent, as the magazine's September cover star.
The 19-year-old, who became an Internet phenomenon after creating her own YouTube lifestyle channel, has over 9 million subscribers on the social media website.
Since then, Mota, who also shared the news of her magazine cover on Instagram, has appeared on celebrity dance competition "Dancing with the Stars" and designed her own line of clothing for teen retailer Aeropostale. However, she hasn't always been so confident and willing to take center stage.
"I had really bad anxiety," she told Latina. "I would have panic attacks every time I was around a lot of people. I didn't even want to hang out with my family members."
Mota's struggle with anxiety and depression came after friends created a fake MySpace profile under the then 12-year-old's name and used it to criticize her body.
"It got to the point that I didn't think I could ever shake this," she said. "I thought, 'My God, this is going to be my life forever,' Clearly, talking about it still brings up painful memories. ... I was scared to express my opinion or talk because I was afraid of judgment. I thought, 'I'm always going to be too scared to live life.' That's when I knew I had to do something, and I started doing the videos."
In an interview with Adweek, Mota, who is close to the exclusive 10 million subscribers group, revealed she has no plans to slow down and has always focused on her content rather than numbers.
"It just goes back to never thinking that I would reach 20,000 subscribers," Mota said.
"It's just not something you really think about. And I'm just doing what I love and that's my main goal. I've never focused so much on the view count or subscribers. I've always just wanted to create content for my existing subscribers instead of focusing on how many more people I can get to my channel."
