'Nosferatu' Remake News: Robert Eggers To Pen Screenplay of 1922 Horror Film Remake
A classic horror film is set to join the list of old movies lined up for a reboot. The cult horror film, "Nosferatu," has been confirmed for a remake, and Studio 8 is set to make the movie.
According to Variety, the upcoming film, which is currently untitled, will be based on the 1922 silent film of the same name. German Expressionist F.W. Murnau made the original movie, which starred Max Schreck as the iconic vampire called Count Ortok.
The movie was a loose adaptation of the novel written by Bram Stoker, "Dracula." It featured a vampire count who wanted to acquire a house in Germany but instead, got hooked on the wife of his real estate agent.
The word, "Nosferatu," is said to be of Romanian origin and was popularized in Stoker's classic novel.
Studio 8 has already signed Robert Eggers on board to make the reboot film. He will also pen the screenplay for the movie.
Eggers rose to fame after his film, "The Witch," became a critical success in the recent Sundance Film Festival where he won the 2015 Directing Award.
How the movie got the green light
As Deadline noted, Jon Silk was the reason Studio 8 got hold of the "Nosferatu" deal. For the past months, the studio worked hard to secure the rights to the movie.
Meanwhile, Eggers, who will direct and write the movie, is no newbie with Studio 8. The filmmaker already has a project confirmed with the studio before he landed the "Nosferatu" remake.
He is set to write and helm the medieval movie, "The Knight," for Studio 8.
Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen will produce the vampire reboot for the studio. Both Van Hoy and Knudsen produced "The Knight" as well as the award-winning "The Witch."
The upcoming movie will not be a direct remake of the 1922 original. Instead, it will be be based on the earliest produced film.
In 1979, a remake of the Murnau original came out as "Nosferatu the Vampyre." Werner Herzog directed the second film. However, the silent film was more popular and considered "ground breaking" by many critics, reported Cinema Blend.
No additional details have been revealed for the upcoming movie and it remains to be seen who will be part of the cast and how the plot will turn out in the coming months.
The studio has yet to set an exact date for the release of the reboot movie.
