‘Teen Mom OG’ Cast News: Maci Bookout Dishes About Bad Decisions, Sex With Ryan Edwards in New Memoir
Fans may have thought they knew everything about Maci Bookout from her MTV appearance first in "16 and Pregnant" and, later, in "Teen Mom OG," but her newly released book "Bulletproof" drops some bombshells about the Tennessee native's life.
There are whimsical parts of the book, such as poetry and advice, like "5 Ways to Slowly Kill a Relationship," but the most interesting part of the memoir is its raw truth about what led to her teen pregnancy, her heartbreaks and lessons learned.
Her romance with Bentley's baby daddy, Ryan Edwards, began after the pair met through motocross events. Bookout admits she didn't use birth control -- of course, neither did Edwards.
"I was aware of the risk, but it didn't seem as big, serious or real as it should have," she wrote in the book. "On some irrational level, I felt disconnected from the idea of pregnancy, and on a simpler level, I had no idea how to get condoms or birth control if I wanted them."
Shortly after Bookout and Edwards became intimate, they conceived Bentley. Once she discovered the pregnancy, she told Edwards by phone but did not tell her parents until after a doctor's appointment weeks later.
Once both families were aware of the pregnancy, Edwards proposed marriage on Bookout's 17th birthday and moved in together.
"There was a strange new distance between us as we both separately did what we had to do on the deadline we were on," she said, explaining how the couple somehow stopped investing more in their relationship.
Once Bentley was born in October 2008, Bookout claims Edwards worked and provided for his family but was not emotionally available.
"Bentley was like this amazing, special energy in the house that was so easy to tap into. But I just couldn't seem to get his father to see the appeal," she said. "Eventually there wasn't even enough of a connection for us to rescue."
When Bookout and Edwards broke up, she and Bentley moved back in with her parents. She dated childhood friend, Kyle King, who lived in Nashville, and though he was a positive influence in Bentley's life, a serious relationship wasn't possible.
Meanwhile, Edwards did not seem to care about fatherhood.
"A lot of the time, the only communication Ryan and I had was on camera. There were long periods of time when if we hadn't been filming a show together, he would never have spoken to me at all," she said. "He wouldn't even take on the fun stuff, like when Bentley started playing baseball."
Bookout later met motocross rider Taylor McKinney, introduced to her by mutual friends. He lived in Texas at the time, but they stayed in touch and began dating. The long-distance relationship proved to be stressful. Months into the relationship, she told McKinney they needed to break up or he needed to move to Tennessee. He agreed to join her in Tennessee.
"I was scared that once he moved in we'd end up miserable and start fighting all the time," she said. "Or maybe he'd realize he was a commitment-phobe after all."
It seems the "Teen Mom OG" star has finally found true love with McKinney. The couple started talking about marriage and children.
A fertility specialist told Bookout she wasn't creating any eggs due to polycystic ovary syndrome and "might as well go off birth control." She conceived a daughter within months and said, "It felt like I was allowed to enjoy the experience in a way that hadn't been encouraged before."
Life has handed Bookout many challenges, but she now has a loving life partner, two healthy children and a Media Technology degree from Chattanooga State Community College.
"I proved to myself that I can be bulletproof. Now, it's time to be happy," the 23-year-old said.
Bookout's "Bulletproof" book is available in both hardcover and Kindle versions.
