Latinas on Television: 10 Actresses You Should Be Watching
Latinas are having a moment on television. Some of today's biggest and most critically acclaimed television shows include and are led by Latina's who are only getting started. Everyone knows Sofia Vergara and Gina Rodriguez, but these other Latinas are just as noteworthy.
1. Dascha Polanco: "Orange Is The New Black"
The Dominican actress is making waves with her role as Daya in the critically acclaimed comedy but is also known for speaking out about Latina's in Hollywood. Polanco, a native New Yorker, attended Hunter College and worked in a Bronx, New York hospital before landing the role.
2. Diane Guerrero: "Orange Is The New Black" / "Jane the Virgin"
Guerrero has not only taken on one critically acclaimed shows, but two. The Colombian actress plays Maritza on "OITNB" and best friend to Gina Rodriguez's Jane in the CW series.
3. Selenis Leyva: "Orange Is The New Black"
Leyva, who has received great reviews for her role of leader of the Latinas, Gloria, on the female led show, is of Cuban and Dominican decent. The 43-year-old star has appeared on dramas like "The Good Wife," "The Sopranos" and "Girls."
4. Mía Maestro: "The Strain"
The Argentinian actress may be gaining popularity as Nora Martinez in the vampire apocalyptic series, but the actress has been on television several times before. Maestro played Nadia Santos in "Alias" and appeared in "White Collar." She's also been in films like "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2" and "Frida."
5. Christian Serratos: "The Walking Dead"
The young actress made her television debut on Nickelodean and was later cast as Bella's friend Angela in "Twilight." The 24-year-old, who is part Mexican, now battles zombies as Rosita on the record-breaking series.
6. Melissa Fumero: "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
Fumero, who is up for an Imagen Award for her role of Amy Santiago on the hit show, is of Cuban decent. The 32-year-old previously played Adriana on "One Life to Live" and had a recurring role on "Gossip Girl."
7. Stephanie Beatriz: "Brooklyn Nine-Nine"
The Argentinian-born actress is the daughter of a Bolivian mother and Colombian father. Before her role of the hilarious and tough detective Rosa Diaz, Beatriz had guest roles on "Modern Family," "Southland" and Disney's "Jessie."
8. Morena Baccarin: "Gotham"
The 36-year-old Brazilian star has appeared in various shows before taking on the role of Dr. Leslie Thompkins in "Gotham." Baccarin has appeared in "V," "The Flash" and earned an Emmy nomination for her role of Jessica Brody in Showtime's "Homeland."
9. Roselyn Sanchez: Devious Maids
Sanchez has been a Latin face in Hollywood for years. The Puerto Rican actress, who plays Carmen Luna on the Lifetime show, has also had roles in "Without A Trace," "Rush Hour 2" and "The Game Plan."
10. Dania Ramirez: Devious Maids
Like her costar, Roselyn Sanchez, Ramirez has been on television for years, appearing in "Heroes," "Entourage" and "The Sopranos." The Dominican actress also added mutant to her list of roles when she appeared in "X-Men: The Last Stand." Ramirez has also appeared in music videos for Jay-Z, Wisin & Yandel and LL Cool J.
