André 3000 Joins ‘American Crime’ Season 2
André Benjamin, better known as Outkast rapper André 3000, has recently been cast in season 2 of ABC's "American Crime," Rolling Stone reports.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Benjamin will play Michael Lacroix, a successful Midwestern architect whose son gets involved in a scandal at an elite private school.
THR adds that the second season of "American Crime" will address more gender and sexual identity issues.
A.V. Club notes that despite being a musician and rapper, Benjamin is no stranger to acting. His credits include small acting roles on "The Shield," Semi Pro," and "Jimi: All is By My Side."
"American Crime" show runner John Ridley expressed his excitement over Benjamin's role on the show in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Ridley previously worked with Benjamin on "All is By My Side" and is excited to continue working with him on "American Crime."
"Personally, I couldn't be more excited than to work again with Andre," Ridley told THR. "He is an amazing individual, a true artist, and All Is by My Side is one of the reasons I was given the reins on American Crime. Folks at ABC were absolutely moved by Andre's performance in the film, and by the overall language of cinema we used in telling the story."
Rolling Stone reports that "American Crime" had a successful first season and its 11th episode, which premiered March 2015, was nominated for 10 Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series.
Benjamin will join the show's star-studded cast, which includes returning cast members Timothy Hutton, Felicity Huffman, Regina King, and Lili Taylor. The show's retuning cast members will reportedly be playing new roles in season 2.
"[Season 2 of American Crime is] a completely different scenario and a completely different crime, even placed in a different part of America," ABC entertainment President Paul Lee told Entertainment Weekly. "Some of these iconic actors from season 1 of American Crime are going to come back and play different roles."
