Sony wants people to take excellent self-portraits, or "selfies," with their two latest smartphones. The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 will both have powerful front-facing cameras that will enable high quality selfies, CNET reports.

Both smartphones were introduced Monday, and they will each offer 13-megapixel (MP) front-facing cameras. This is a different approach for a smartphone, since most phones offer a rather weak front-facing camera on the front and focus on the rear-facing camera. Most people are happy with taking pictures of the environment and things that surround them and do not need a powerful front-facing camera, but selfies are becoming extremely popular and there might be a demand for higher-quality self-portraits.

Sony is calling the Xperia C5 Ultra a "PROselfie" smartphone. It is equipped with dual 13 MP cameras and a full-HD 6-inch screen displaying a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Inside the Xperia C5 Ultra is a 1.7 GHz octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and a battery that Sony says can last up to two days on a single charge. 

The Xperia M5 is labeled as a "super mid-range" smartphone by Sony. Like the Xperia C5 Ultra, the Xperia M5 has a 13 MP front-facing camera for selfies, but the rear-facing camera is 21.5 MP. The rear-facing camera on the Xperia M5 also has a 5x clear image zoom that allows closer shots. Inside the Xperia M5 is a 2.0 GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core processor and 3 GB of RAM. The Xperia M5 has a 5-inch screen with the same 1,920 x 1,080 resolution that the Xperia C5 Ultra has. Like the Xperia C5 Ultra, Sony claims the Xperia M5 will last up to two days on a single battery charge.

Sony has struggled to sell smartphones, failing to compete with Apple and Samsung, because of its lack of awareness among consumers. 

"Most U.S. consumers either don't know or don't care that Sony makes phones," said Avi Greengart, who covers consumer electronics for Current Analysis. 

The Sony Xperia C5 Ultra could definitely make some selfie shooters happy with its Exmor RS sensor and HDR capabilities, Pocket Lint reports. More people will be able to squeeze into group selfies with the wide 22 millimeter lens as well.

No pricing information or availability for North America has made available yet for either phone.
