Aliens & UFO Sightings: Mars Curiosity Rover Snaps Picture of "Crab-Like" Creature
A recent image captured by the Mars Curiosity Rover on the Red Planet is causing social media users to speculate an alien has been spotted, Metro reports.
The image appears to show a "crab-like" creature crawling out of a cave on Mars. Social media users are calling the suspected alien an "awesome Martian space crab" and "cave guard," according to RT.
The Facebook group Journey to the Surface of Mars has widely discussed the image taken in July by Curiosity. The members of the group, whose slogan is "They will not tell the truth about MARS," were able to enlarge the image to show more detail.
"Now this one is AWESOME!!!" a post in the group said.
Some social media users are making comparisons of the image to the "facehugger" creature in the "Alien" movies.
Even with the images showing the suspected creature, not everyone convinced that it is an alien. Seasoned alien-hunter Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research, says, "Those that send them to me [images] are generally quite excited, as they claim that these frequently resemble SOMETHING you wouldn't expect to find on the rusty, dusty surface of the Red Planet.
"It's usually some sort of animal, but occasionally even weirder objects such as automobile parts. Maybe they think there are cars on Mars."
Earlier in July the Curiosity Rover found a rock that could contain organic material. This caused scientists and social media users to wonder if there could be life on Mars.
NASA said that the rock was "bedrock with surprisingly high levels of silica," which is a rock-forming compound containing silicon and oxygen. On Earth, these rocks are commonly found as quartz.
"High levels of silica in the rock could indicate ideal conditions for preserving ancient organic material, if present, so the science team wants to take a closer look," NASA wrote.
