Heavily Latino Florida City Votes Not to Condemn Donald Trump
The city council of a heavily Latino Florida community on Wednesday rejected a proposal to condemn Donald Trump's comments about Mexican immigrants so as not to "politicize" the body's work.
Doral Vice Mayor Sandra Ruíz, a Mexican immigrant, had introduced a resolution seeking to chastise the television personality turned presidential candidate over his allegations that Mexico brings drug dealers, criminals and rapists to the United States -- remarks that caused widespread backlash in the Latino community.
But in a 3-2 vote, the council members -- all of whom are Latino -- rejected the effort, though they insisted that they, too, disagreed with Trump's comments, WPLG, the Miami ABC affiliate, noted.
"This dais is not the right place to talk about political issues," Mayor Luigi Boria said. "We have to look forward."
The city leader and other council members also pointed to the clout Trump has in the Florida community.
"Mr. Trump is the second-largest employer here in the city. He employees more than 1,000 people in our city. He has invested more than $250 million in our city," Boria said.
Councilwoman Ana María Rodríguez echoed the mayor's argument, rejecting a proposal to revoke past honors Doral had bestowed on the real-estate mogul.
"I personally don't support, you know, taking the key back or calling him a persona non grata," Rodríguez said. "Mr. Trump has made a significant investment in our city."
But Ruíz said she was disappointed that the city council had rejected her initiative.
"Money talks," the vice mayor said. "All we wanted was to condemn (Trump's) offensive words." She also revealed she'd had a "cordial conversation" with Trump last week, but the presidential candidate had refused to apologize for his remarks.
Trump, for his part, said Ruíz was a "third-grade politician who's a total phony (and) who shouldn't be asking me to take a picture with her every time she sees me."
