A two-month old iPhone 5c spontaneously caught fire in the back pants of a 13-year-old eighth grader from Maine.

The young lady was treated for second-degree burns on her legs and back, reports Daily Mail. Her iPhone started smouldering in her pocket and after a pop, smoke began to billow forcing the girl to remove her pants in class to prevent further burns. Female classmates gathered around her and helped her remove her clothing while the boys were asked to exit the classroom.

According to USA Today, fire officials are currently investigating the incident but one speculation is that the battery of the device "shorted out" as the girl sat down. Locals say that the Fire Marshall handling the incident has never seen such an occurrence before.

"People should obviously use caution when placing their phones in their back pockets so as not to crush them and cause an electrical short," one official says.

To date, there is still no official word from Apple after the report but it's believed the incident is extremely rate. IPhones have previously caught on fire but incidences have been few and far in between. It's difficult to pinpoint a single cause of such event.

"I've never seen anything like that," says the principal, who credits the girl with a "stop, drop, and roll" move when the incident happened. Principal Jeff Rodman said, 'She knew right away something was wrong and, in a panic, knew her pants were on fire caused by the cell phone.'

Upon sensing the danger, the girl reportedly dropped to the ground and began to roll in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

The young girl's mother, Mrs. Milligan was shocked to hear about what happened but her daughter had remained calm and asked to return to school after seeking medical attention. The student was brought to a nearby hospital and received care and was released in less than an hour.
