‘Westworld’ on HBO Releases Fantastic New Trailer [Watch]
The thrilling new drama coming to HBO, "Westworld," has debuted its first trailer, and it is full of mystery and intrigue. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new show is based on the 1973 film by Michael Crichton.
"Westworld" was created and produced by J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk. Abrams' Bad Robot production company produced the series along with Warner Bros.
The show is about an amusement park run by an inventor, played by Anthony Hopkins in his first series regular role. The park is not just any amusement park though. It is populated by lifelike robots and themed for adults only.
One of the big draws for this series is that it can play off the anthology structure and still retain the same story. The android robots in this show can be killed off and revived to have a new persona.
Seasoned Hollywood veterans have been attracted to the project, including James Marsden, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood. The show will allow them to play multiple characters in the series with many different personas, embodying the multiple incarnations of their android.
It is unlike other anthology shows, which wrap up the entire storyline and start a completely different one the following season with many of the same actors. That was a trend started by "American Horror Story" on FX and has played out on other shows like "True Detective."
The series was originally slated to debut in 2015, but was pushed back to the first part of 2016.
HBO programming President Michael Lombardo spoke with reporters at the Television Critics Association event this year, and gave them a little insight on what to expect from the show and how it is different than the original film.
"[With] the film ... you were very invested in one particular group of humans that were enjoying the park and their experience with the robots. This is not that. This is very much told from the POV of the robots," Lombardo said.
