The Infiniti Q50 will add a new and more powerful engine to its model in 2016. The luxury vehicle division of Japanese carmaker Nissan has confirmed that it will add a turbo charged four-cylinder engine to the sports sedan's upcoming model.

The announcement was made during the company's 2016 vehicle roster update report.

"There are additional changes in store for 2016, starting with the addition of a new 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine for the Infiniti Q50 sports sedan available in the winter of 2016," wrote the report.

The company did not disclose additional details about the upcoming sedan except for the new turbo charged engine option. Infiniti stated that more details and specs about the sports sedan will be revealed in January at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

"We haven't announced specifics for model-year 2016 powertrains," the luxury carmaker's official spokesperson Nick Towrk told Edmunds. "But the Infiniti Q50 hybrid will continue."

Previous iterations of the vehicle offered only two options. The 2015 Q50 comes in a 3.7-liter V6 engine and a 3.5-liter V6 engine, electric motor and lithium-ion battery for the hybrid version. The gasoline edition of the 2015 Q50 is packed with 328 horsepower as well.

The turbo charged engine for the Infiniti Q50 has already been released to the European and Chinese markets, noted Auto Blog.

For that engine, which was sourced from Mercedes-Benz, the horsepower is up to 211 with a 236 pound-feet of torque. This is likely the same power that the upcoming engine will offer in the 2016 edition.

However, given that no specific details have been released yet, it is probable that the Japanese carmaker will do everything it can to bridge the more than 100-horsepower gap with the gas options of the model before it is released.

With the release of a smaller engine, Infiniti will finally have a spot for the Q50 among rivals BMW 3 Series and the Cadillac ATS, both offering the 2.0-L turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

The new engine will also enable more car enthusiasts to consider the 2016 Infiniti Q50 because of fuel efficiency and lesser emissions as opposed to a V6 model.

Aside from the Q50, Infiniti also announced that changes will come to the QX50 in the form of bigger space and leg room while the SUV QX80 will add a Signature Edition complete with Driver Assistance, Split Bench options, Saddle Tan interiors and chrome mirror caps among others.

The luxury carmaker is expected to release more information about its 2016 lineup of vehicles in January at the North American International Auto Show.
