LG might make history with the highest resolution offered in a smartwatch. LG is rumored to be developing the code-named "LG Nemo" smartwatch, and it is expected to have up to a 480 x 480 pixel display, Tech Radar reports.

The next LG watch would have a circular display and if reports picked up by Phandroid are correct, it would also have a resolution that is similar to a smartphone's display. This would be the best resolution offered in a smartwatch.

Up until now, smartwatches have used displays that are 320 x 320, like in the LG Watch Urbane, or 319 x 390, like in the Apple Watch. This means that these smartwatches are displaying around 240 pixels per inch. If the LG Nemo watch has a 480 x 480 display, that would mean 300 to 400 pixels per inch. With that resolution, people might mistake the digital watch for an analog watch, Liliputing reports.

The Nemo code name is what LG is using for now for the device. However, Google also uses fish names for its Nexus devices, so it is possible that the Nemo could be made by Google or that LG is working closely with Google on it. The Nexus 6 had the code name of "Shamu," the Nexus 9 was "Flounder," and the Nexus 5 was "Hammerhead."

The first two Android Wear devices came from LG and Samsung. The LG G Watch used the code name "Dory" and the Samsung Gear Live was called "Sprat." Those two devices run stock Android Wear software, which almost makes them Nexus devices, but officially they are not.

LG has not confirmed the LG Nemo smartwatch, but if the Phandroid reports are true, confirmation is coming soon. If it has as high a resolution as it is rumored to have, it could set the standard for future smartwatch displays.
