'Star Wars: Episode 7 -- The Force Awakens' Spoilers, News: First Photo of Luke Skywalker Suggests He's Not Evil in New Film
"Star Wars" fans went wild on Thursday when it was revealed that a new image of Luke Skywalker had surfaced online in his new outfit for "The Force Awakens."
In fact, it was the first time in 30 years that fans had seen the hero of the original Star Wars trilogy in full Jedi apparel.
The context of the image is unclear as Mark Hamill looks like he is prepping for some sort of photoshoot. Some have speculated that he may be prepping for a hologram image that could appear in the new movie as a plot device to guide the superheroes; this would be reminiscent of Princess Leia's hologram in "Episode IV -- A New Hope."
The most important aspect of the image however is the color that Luke wears.
The last time fans saw the youngster, he was sporting a black outfit, emphasizing just how close Luke is to the dark side despite his own inherent goodness. In 30 years however it seems that the hero has fully identified himself with the light as his robe is arguably the whitest and lightest of any robe worn by any Jedi, even Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan. Yoda is the only knight with a comparable color palette on his robes.
Fans may recall the most Jedi wore brown robes over their outfits. Luke's robe is beige and the underlying robes are white. See the below images for comparison.
The Sith have always been identified with black as their color of choice and from the early images of Kylo Ren, it seems that the Knights of Ren also favor black as their preferred look.
For months there had been rumors that Luke would be turning to the dark side in the new film "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." The clothing all but confirms that Luke is in fact still on the light side of the force.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on Dec. 18.
