‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ Cast & Plot: Here's What We Know So Far About the First Film in New Standalone Series
A new generation of 'Star Wars' takes off with the first anthology film of the galaxy, 'Star Wars: Rogue One'.
Directed by Gareth Edwards ('Godzilla'), the new film will tell the story of a group of rebels and their mission to steal the Empire's plans for the infamous Death Star, according to the official statement for Star Wars.
Although the audience never knew the details behind the mission, this is the heist that launched the entire saga. In "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope," the first scene told of the stolen plans for the Death Star, which led to the Imperial forces capturing Princess Leia's ship in search of it.
Finally, the fans will be able to get a glimpse of a new perspective of the beloved franchise. "Star Wars: Rogue One" shares the untold journey of the resistance fighters who played a crucial role in the rebellion.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy explained the different approach to the Star Wars universe, in a report from Entertainment Weekly.
"Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe," she said in the official statement. "It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I'm so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he's selected for Rogue One."
An impressive cast is set to bring the new "Star Wars" film to life, including Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Emmy nominee Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.
Other notable names attached to the project include veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll who had the idea for the film, plus executive producers Allison Shearmur, John Knoll, Simon Emanuel and Jason McGatlin.
Co-producers are Kiri Hart and John Swartz, while a veteran crew spearheads the movie: Greig Fraser as director of photography, Neil Corbould as special effects supervisor, Doug Chiang Neil Lamont as production designers, Rob Inch as stunt coordinator, Neal Scanlan as creature effects supervisor, and Dave Crossman and Glyn Dillon as co-costume designers.
During the Disney D23 expo at Anaheim, Disney and Lucasfilm unveiled more details on the upcoming "Star Wars" films. The Guardian reported that other spin-offs in the works include a movie centered on Han Solo and another on bounty hunter Boba Fett.
In addition, Colin Trevorrow ("Jurassic World") will direct the "Star Wars Episode IX" in 2019, after JJ Abrams' "Episode VII" in December and Rian Johnson's "Episode VIII" in 2017, noted the Rolling Stone.
"Star Wars: Rogue One" is slated to be released on December 16, 2016.
