Google has finally unveiled the final preview of its latest Android operating system called Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The tech giant has also released the software developer kit or SDK along with the preview for developers who want to get a head start on their apps for the new OS.

According to Android Central, the update will be available to users over-the-air. However, those who prefer to check it out earlier may head on to the Android developer site and download it straightaway.

Google has currently made the hardware system images available for testing via Nexus 5 "hammerhead," Nexus 6 "shamu," Nexus 9 "volantis" and Nexus Player "fugu" only.

As the company releases the Android 6.0 SDK, it has also upgraded the Android Support Library to version 23 for the developers to incorporate the new platforms and permissions needed in their apps, stated the Android Developers Blog.

Part of the change is a "new permissions model" that will prevent the app from malfunctioning if a user decides to disable certain permissions within the app.

The final preview is still in the beta phase so the preview images for testing may not necessarily reflect the final output and interface of the system. Changes may still be applied to the overall look of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

What's new?

The Android Developers Blog also outlined the major changes that arrived with the update, including a "Final Permissions User Interface" and API Change for the system.

Google will accept API 23 apps through the Google Play Developer Console. Developers can start working on their respective apps to include new features once the OS goes live.

According to Recombu, the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow update will have "power-saving features." The update is said to have fixed battery-draining concerns that have plagued many devices.

It will also automatically remove network privileges of unused apps so it does not take up data network and bandwidth when not in use. Support for fingerprint sensor and scanners have been upgraded in the new OS with the addition of an easier fingerprint enrollment system.

Just like its rival, Apple Pay, Google has decided to add Android Pay to the new OS.

The exact release date of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is still unknown, but based on the information from the blog, Google intends to roll out the update this fall.
