What a Major League Baseball season it's been so far. While most baseball fans are watching the standings and keep an eye out on their teams, numerous players are making their case for league MVP. In the American League, the two big favorites are easily Mike Trout and Josh Donaldson.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout was the leading MVP for the majority of the season, but a recent slump has some thinking differently. Trout injured his wrist on July 27 when he made a diving save in the outfield. His batting average has dipped dramatically, and Trout may not win his second consecutive MVP award.

Trout's batting average in August is a staggering .161. Trout also has just one home run this entire month.

Still, Trout is having another great season with a .294 batting average and 33 home runs. The Angels still control their own playoff destiny as they sit in the second wild card spot ahead of the Baltimore Orioles at 62-57. As Trout and the Angels are struggling, Josh Donaldson and the Blue Jays are heading in a different direction.

The Blue Jays are fighting with the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East. Donaldson leads the league in runs scored, runs batted in and plate appearances. Donaldson may play in Canada, but his success hasn't gone unnoticed in the United States. This year Donaldson received the most All-Star game votes of any player in the league.

Donaldson now leads Trout in almost every major category including batting average, runs scored, hits, 20 more runs batted in and doubles. MLB voters can't nitpick at Donaldson's below .300 batting average either. It was just last year that Trout won the AL MVP with a .287 batting average.

The only Blue Jays player to win MVP was George Bell back in 1987. Last season Donaldson placed eighth in the AL MVP voting.

We haven't seen the Blue Jays make the playoffs since the 1993 season, but at the rate they're going, the Jays will at minimum grab a wild card spot. It's extremely difficult for a player to win MVP without making the playoffs, and if the Angels continue their losing ways, it could cost Trout this year's MVP award. Dominican outfielder Nelson Cruz is having a fantastic season with a .321 average and 36 home runs, but again, the odds of winning the MVP without making the playoffs are really slim.

Trout isn't out of this by any stretch of the imagination. It's just momentum is heavily on Donaldson's side. Naturally, we tend to forget the beginning of the season and remember more of the late season heroics when it comes to MVP voting. As the Angels and Trout are struggling, Donaldson and the Blue jays are surging.

There are still 40 more games remaining this season, so much more is left to be seen.
