Gennady Golovkin Next Fight: Andre Ward Not a Priority, Says Trainer Abel Sanchez
Gennady Golovkin and his camp are looking to win all world titles in the division, and even an attractive showdown with Andre Ward will not make them think twice.
In July, before the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization champion's fight with International Boxing Federation champ David Lemieux was announced, Ward called out Golovkin for a title fight, FightHype reported.
Recently, the Kazakh warrior's side has spoken and it is definitely not the good news Ward is waiting for.
Trainer Abel Sanchez made it clear that a Golovkin-Ward bout is not their priority at the moment, and as far as he is concerned, Ward (28-0, 15KOs) is "not relevant" at all to merit their attention. Golovkin's focus right now is to unify the titles at the middleweight division, Boxing Scene reported.
"Ward needs to become more relevant. As long as he's fighting and he's winning and looking good it makes a fight with Gennady more viable. But right now Gennady's intent is to be fighting the Lemieux then the winner of Canelo-Cotto, so he's going to be tied up a little while," the world-class trainer said.
Even Tom Loeffler, the managing director of K2 Promotions that promotes Golovkin, had the same stand.
"Ward-Golovkin is not a realistic fight at this point. Maybe after Golovkin unifies the titles we can talk the Ward fight," Loeffler said.
Loeffler also explained simply why they were willing to pit Golovkin against Carl Froch before at 168 pounds and Floyd Mayweather at 154 pounds, and not Ward at 168 pounds.
"It just doesn't make sense to fight Andre because he's not that relevant. There's no guarantee that Golovkin fights at 168," the promoter said.
Meanwhile, Sanchez also pointed out that their main goal is to face the winner of the World Boxing Council middleweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez. The veteran trainer said that Golovkin is ready to face either Cotto or Canelo at any venue in the near future.
"Gennady doesn't care where he fights. If Cotto wins, it would naturally happen here at the Garden and become one of the biggest fights in the building's history. If Canelo wins, we can go to Texas and fight at Dallas Stadium or the Alamodome," the coach said via BoxingScene.
