Caitlyn Jenner Struggles to Keep Fans Amidst New Possible Charges in Fatal Car Crash
Caitlyn Jenner is struggling to keep viewers watching her mini-docuseries "I Am Cait," which chronicles her everyday struggle as a Transgender woman.
According to Fox News, the E! series lost half of its viewers after its premiere. In episode 1, Jenner managed to bring in 2.7 million viewers, but by the next week, only 1.3 million viewers turned on the show. By Aug. 9, there were only 1.2 million viewers for the third episode.
What's the issue? It can't be the network because "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" attracted 2.37 million viewers in a recent episode. Should "I Am Cait" bring in Kardashians for more ratings?
Jenner grabbed the public's attention when she announced her identity in a Diane Sawyer interview for ABC News. At the time, she still went by Bruce Jenner.
Shortly after the interview, she made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine as the woman she always knew she was. E! reached out to the magazine at the time with the intention of producing a documentary in order to tell Jenner's story, not to make a hit series.
"It's not at all a Kardashian spin-off. ... We will not resort to spectacle. That doesn't mean we can't have fun with it," E!'s head of programming, Jeff Olde said. "We all love ratings but we understand the power and responsibility to be able to share this story."
Meanwhile, Jenner could face misdemeanor manslaughter charges for a car crash she was involved in that killed a 69-year-old woman, CNN reports.
The deadly four-car accident happened back in February, before Jenner's transition. Kimberly Howe died on the scene, sparking an ongoing investigation that is now finished.
"We did determine in the investigation that Jenner was going at an unsafe speed for the prevailing conditions, even though [she] was traveling under the posted speed limit," Los Angeles Det. Richard Curry said.
Will Jenner have to do jail time if she is charged and found guilty?
