NFL Roster Update: Brian Hoyer to Start for Houston Texans, NE Patriots Sign Reggie Wayne
The 2015 NFL Season is about three weeks away and teams are starting to shape up their 53-man roster. The Houston Texans have named their starting quarterback to kick off the season while the New England Patriots have signed a wide receiver.
Houston Texans Name Brian Hoyer as Starting Quarterback
In a report from NFL, Houston coach Bill O'Brien announced that Brian Hoyer was named starting quarterback for the 2015 season. Hoyer beat Ryan Mallett for the starting job.
"In the end, I thought that Brian showed me the most consistency, the most composure in certain situations, the experience in our system. All those different things that go into the fact that I think he's ready to be our starter. I have a ton of respect for Ryan Mallett. I believe in him as a player," O'Brien said.
HNGN reported that Hoyer was an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2009 and backed up Tom Brady for three seasons. In 2012, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals for one year then to the Cleveland Browns the next year.
He appeared in three games in 2013 but was given the starting spot last season before going down with an injury. Hoyer signed with Houston last March for a two-year, $10.5-million contract, per Houston Texans.
New England Sign Free-Agent WR Reggie Wayne
ESPN reported that the New England Patriots signed WR Reggie Wayne for a one-year deal. Wayne played with the Indianapolis Colts last season with 64 receptions for 779 yards and two touchdowns.
Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, had good things to say about Wayne. On his weekly appearance on WEEI, the coach said, as quoted by ESPN, "He's certainly had a great career and has done a lot of things for the Colt organization, primarily playing on the left but then in more recent years being moved around to playing on the right and also in some slot situations. I think he has a lot of versatility and obviously he has a lot of experience, so we'll just have to see how it goes."
NFL noted that Wayne played for the Colts for 14 seasons ever since being drafted in 2001. He currently has 1,070 career receptions and 14,345 yards.
The 36-year-old receiver fits the Patriots' need of receivers as Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and Aaron Dobson are all injured. Edelman has been out with a lower leg injury, LaFell still can't perform physically and Dobson has been sidelined by a hamstring injury, as per ESPN.
