‘War of the Planet of the Apes’ Release Date & Cast: Gabriel Chavarria Gets Role, Filming Kicks Off in October
A war is brewing as a new installment of the "Planet of the Apes" reboot comes to life, "War of the Planet of the Apes".
The reboot of the famous series has earned critical acclaim, especially the second installment "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," which earned $708 million worldwide, according to Forbes. Hoping to replicate the success of the box office hit, 20th Century Fox once again put director Mike Reeves at the helm.
According to a report from Deadline, the up-and-coming star of Universal's "Low Riders" Gabriel Chavarria is in talks to fill the role of one of the leads in 20th Century Fox's "War of the Planet of the Apes". He will play one of the two human leads, while Andy Serkis will reprise his role as the ape Caesar.
The human leads of the first two "Planet of the Apes" films, James Franco and Jason Clarke, will not be returning to the franchise.
While still a new face in the industry, Chavarria had some success as the lead in Hulu's drama series "East Los High". He has also had roles in "Aquarius", "Prime Suspect", "Southland" and "Teacher of the Year".
Although the release date of the film is two years away, production will begin in October, Deadline reported.
There are few details on the upcoming blockbuster, apart from the casting of Chavarria and Serkis. In an interview with JoBlo back in 2014, Reeves touched on the direction of the third installment.
"We are going to take him [Caesar] to places that test him in a way that is more painful, and in ways that he has never been tested before," he explained. "[We will] really test his leadership, and more than that his heart and soul. There are ways in which the experience he had with Koba in the last film, really create a context in this story that is going to be, in a way, his greatest challenge yet."
According to the director, the story of the third film will show Caesar moving beyond his role as revolutionary and leader in the previous installments. He continued, "This is going to be the story that is going to cement his status as a seminal figure in ape history, and sort of leads to an almost biblical status. He is going to become like a mythic ape figure, like Moses."
"War of the Planet of the Apes" is slated to hit theaters on July 14th, 2017.
