Jimmy Fallon Hosts "Tonight Show": First Night on the Job a Success
Jimmy Fallon proved to the world that not only would he be a hit hosting NBC's Late Night, but he would also take over The Tonight Show the right way. Seems like Jay Leno picked the correct successor as Fallon joked around with Will Smith, won a prestigious bet and rocked out to U2. Yeah, Jimmy had a good night.
As surprising as it may be, Jimmy Fallon isn't loved by everyone. The native New Yorker, who was part of a very funny cast on Saturday Night Live and then hosted his own late night show for five years, has some "haters." "Not Funny" was written on Jimmy's forehead with a permanent marker on an ad in the 42nd Street Time Square Subway station. Having met the comedian more than once, I personally know he isn't only funny; he's a down to earth kind of guy.
"I'm Jimmy Fallon, I'll be your host... for now," Jimmy told his new audience as he opened up The Tonight Show. Maybe is the awkward yet hyper kind of way about him or the sincerity behind how he "cracks" during really funny skits...that bothers people? But that's what makes Jimmy unique. "You could tell he was having trouble when he spent half-an-hour interviewing a mop he though was Shaun White," he joked about NBC sportscaster Bob Costas, who had pinkeye during his coverage of the Olympics.
Fans and even celebrities posted photos of them and Jay Leno during his time hosting The Tonight Show with "we will miss you" captions. But many celebrities also love Fallon, one huge name just happened to pop up unexpectedly. "To my buddy who said that I'd never be the host of 'The Tonight Show' -- and you know who you are -- you owe me a hundred bucks buddy." With that, Robert De Niro burst through the curtain and slammed down a hundred dollars on Fallon's desk. After that Joe Namath, Rudolph Giuliani, Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, Mike Tyson, Stephen Colbert and Sarah Jessica Parker also visited Jimmy on his first night.
After 40 years in Los Angeles, Fallon and NBC brought back Tonight back to New York's Rockefeller Plaza studio 6B, once the home of Carson and, before him, Tonight host Jack Paar. Something truly special to viewers and New York City. U2 played in the observation deck atop the G.E Building confirming that the amazing view behind them could only belong to a New York evening.
"I just want to do the best I can and take care of this show for a while," Fallon told viewers. "If you guys let me stick around long enough, maybe I'll get the hang of it."
Will you watch and let Jimmy stick around for a while?
