Aaron Hernandez Murder Case News Update: Accessory Charges Against Cousin Tanya Singleton to be Dropped
Prosecutors are expected to soon formally drop accessory charges against Aaron Hernandez's cousin stemming from the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd amid growing concerns about her worsening cancer condition.
According to ESPN, Tanya Singleton had faced conspiracy to commit accessory after the fact charges after prosecutors alleged she aided one of Hernandez's co-defendants in escaping to Florida after Lloyd's execution-style killing.
Earlier this year, the 25-year-old Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder in the probe and has since been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Appearing in a Massachusetts courtroom, prosecutors told the court on Thursday that Singleton's cancer has steadily progressed despite aggressive therapies aimed at treating it.
Singleton is halfway through a two-year probation sentence after pleading guilty to refusing to take the stand before a grand jury probing the Lloyd slaying despite being granted immunity to do so. The judge in that case also spared her prison time last year because of her faltering condition.
Hernandez is now being held at the Souza-Baranowski maximum security prison. His attorneys have filed motions with the court seeking to have his conviction overturned on grounds a wayward jury was part of the panel that voted to convict him.
Later this year, Hernandez also faces trial on double murder charges in the 2012 drive-by killings of two men outside a nightclub in downtown Boston. In that incident, prosecutors contend Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu were both gunned down by Hernandez after one of them spilled a drink on him inside the club and failed to apologize.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty in the shooting and is expected to go on trial later this year. Just months before being charged in the Lloyd killing, Hernandez had inked a five-year, $40 million extension as a rising star with the New England Patriots.
