Apple is hosting an event on Sept. 9 where they are expected to announce new iPhones. A smaller version of the iPhone 6, called the iPhone 6c, is not expected to be announced at the event, CNet reports.

The Mac and Apple-focused website 9to5Mac reported the iPhone 6c will not be ready in time for the event and will not be announced alongside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

Even though the iPhone 6c will not be announced at the Sept. 9 event, the 4-inch phone will still be released. Apple has been working on the iPhone 6c for quite some time, and it will be released when they are finished.

The iPhone 6c will have the same specifications as the iPhone 6, except the screen size. It will retain the same processor, while the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be equipped with the brand new A9 processor from Apple.

Internally, Apple prototyped an even smaller iPhone with a 3.5-inch screen. This is the same size as the original iPhone from 2007 and all future models, until the iPhone 4s in 2011. It appears that the prototype will not make it any further, and Apple does not plan to release it.

When the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus devices are announced, Apple plans to discontinue the iPhone 5c. The iPhone 5c was the budget-friendly device with older specifications. The iPhone 5s, which was the 2013 upgrade to the iPhone 5, will remain available.

The iPhone 5 was discontinued when the iPhone 5s was introduced, but this year Apple will keep selling the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus when the new iPhones are introduced. Once the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus are released, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will drop by $100 in price. 

With the new iPhones, the fall lineup for iPhone will include the low-end iPhone 5s, the mid-range iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and the high-end iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models.
