Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U Sales Comparison: Will Microsoft go the Way of Nintendo as Sony Soars Amongst Next Gen Consoles?
Is Microsoft beginning to panic? As of now, the Redmond, Wash.-based company isn't sweating too much despite sales of their Xbox One console slowing to a halt.
The PS4 on the other hand is nowhere to be found. When a shipment arrives at Gamestop, Sony's console is already sold out due to longstanding customer reservations. The only way they can sell the PS4 is through expensive bundles that comes with extra controllers, games and other accessories.
Why are sales so poor? All signs point to the price difference. The included Kinect motion sensor is an expensive component of the console. But is that the sole reason why the Xbox One is so undesirable at the moment? Gamers may be still ticked off that Microsoft tried to pull the wool over their eyes and implement a "no used games, internet required" policy. Those policies were vehemently opposed and eventually retracted. Anything is possible and if a company is willing to screw its customers over once, whats stopping Microsoft for continuing that trend.
What needs to happen in order for the Xbox One to have long-term success is the release of exciting exclusive titles like Titanfall, Halo 5, and Dead Rising 4. Until that time these consoles will continue to sit on store shelves and collect dust. At least it has a friend in the long-suffering Wii U.
Still Microsoft most likely they doesn't need to implement a price cut at the moment. Retailers like Walmart and Target are doing that for them. You can effectively purchase an Xbox One from these big-box stores for $450.00 thanks to the inclusion of a $50 gift card or a free game. Gamestop isn't offering gift cards, but it has been forced to implement a layaway program to shed excess inventory.
Financial site The Motley Fool thinks it would be wise for Microsoft to switch up its manufacturing process and ditch the expensive Blu-ray disc drive to cut down costs. That would be a thorn in Gamestop's side (and really any brick-and-mortar retailer when you come to think of it) because it makes money selling physical discs. If a disc-less Xbox One comes to pass, retailers would have less and less influence.
