US Open 2015 Scores & Highlights: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams Advance
Tennis superstars Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic moved on to the third round of competition, while Serena Williams also advanced after winning on Day 3 of the 2015 US Open Tennis at Flushing Meadows.
Djokovic sent another strong message to the rest of the field after scoring another impressive victory on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The top-seeded Serb booked a spot in the third round after a clinical 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win against unseeded Andreas Haider-Maurer in their second-round showdown.
Djokovic, who is eyeing his second US Open title and 10th Grand Slam title of his career, went perfect on his serve and did not allow Haider-Maurer to have a break point for the entire match.
Djokovic will resume his quest for the title on Friday in the third round of competition. He will go up against 25th seed Andreas Seppi of Italy, who defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia in the second round 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-1.
Meanwhile, two-time US Open champion Rafael Nadal also moved one step closer to winning another Grand Slam title. The eight-seeded Spaniard escaped with a hard-earned 7-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory against unseeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina.
Schwartzman pushed his heavily-favored opponent to the limit, particularly in the first and third sets, but Nadal leaned on his vast experience to avoid suffering another early exit in a Grand Slam this year. Earlier this year, the former top-ranked player was eliminated in the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
"When you play against a player that they are able to take all the risks with not much pressure, so then is a little bit more difficult to have the control of the point.," Nadal said in a post-game interview. "Because if the opponent decides to hit every ball then is tougher, no? But tennis is tougher if they playing well."
In the women's side, top seed Serena Williams of the United States was also challenged, but the veteran superstar defied the odds and scored a 7-6, 6-3 win against unseeded Kiki Bertens of Netherlands.
Williams, who is aiming to win all four Grand Slams this year after sweeping the first three, will go up against compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the third round.
