USA vs Peru: International Soccer Friendly Preview, Live Stream & Where To Watch
The United States men's national team will host Peru in an international soccer friendly match on Friday at the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
USA have not played since their disappointing finish at the Gold Cup, where they finished fourth after losing to Jamaica in the semifinals and to Panama on penalties in the third-place match.
The USMNT need the game more than Peru because they are preparing for their upcoming one-game playoff against Mexico in October at Rose Bowl. The USA-Mexico match will decide who will represent the region in the 2017 FIFA Confederation Cup.
USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann will bring in veteran players, including returning goalkeeper Tim Howard, who has not played for the national team in 14 months. Klinsmann said, though, that Brad Guzan will still start for the team against Peru and in their next friendly against Brazil on Wednesday.
But according to Klinsmann, no roster spot is safe at this point. The 51-year-old coach said that all players, including those who performed well at the Gold Cup, should prove that they deserve a spot on the team that will face El Tri on Oct. 10 in California.
"Our message to these guys is simple: Prove a point that you want to be at the Rose Bowl," Klinsmann said via Philly.com. "This is really now time for the guys to make a really strong impression that they understand the situation we're in because of what happened in the Gold Cup."
Guzan, who has manned the goal for United States since after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, knows that he will be challenged by Howard, but the 30-year-old goalkeeper is determined to keep his spot.
"Tim and I get on really well, in terms of on the field and off the field," Guzan said via Goal.com. "You always have someone pushing you or you're pushing someone else. And being in Europe, where it's obviously a little bit more cut-throat than here."
On the other hand, Peru are preparing for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches next month, and they are also tipped to play with a lot of sense of urgency against the USMNT on Friday.
Peru, who finished third at the 2015 Copa America, are expected to lean on the Jefferson Farfan-Paolo Guerrero duo to attack the unpredictable defense of USMNT.
