FIBA Americas 2015 Scores & Schedule: Mexico Faces Puerto Rico, Canadas Collide With Panama
The second round of the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship is underway in Mexico City. Here is a breakdown of Sunday's matches, featuring the remaining eight teams in the tournament.
Dominican Republic vs. Venezuela, 1 p.m. ET
Dominican Republic and Venezuela kicked off the second-round festivities on Sunday afternoon at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City.
Dominican Republic advanced to the second round of the tournament after finishing second in Group A, while Venezuela ended up third in Group B.
Argentina vs. Uruguay, 3:30 p.m. ET
Argentina will look to extend their winning streak when they collide with Uruguay in the second match of the day.
Argentina swept all of their four assignments in the preliminary rounds to take the top spot in Group B, while Uruguay barely made it into the next round.
Uruguay finished tied with Brazil at 1-3, but they took the fourth and last ticket to the second round by virtue of their 71-57 win against the Brazilians.
Argentina, a perennial FIBA Americas title contender, are tipped to win on Sunday. They are expected to lean on veteran forward Luis Scola, who averaged 23.5 points and 11.3 rebounds in their first four games.
Canada vs. Panama, 7 p.m. ET
The star-studded Canadian squad will also resume their quest for the title, which will give them an automatic ticket to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Canada will collide with Panama in their first second-round game. The Canadians ended up second to Argentina in Group B after finishing the preliminary round with a 3-1 record. Their lone defeat came against the Argentines, 94-87, during the second day of the preliminary round.
Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, 9:30 p.m. ET
Mexico and Puerto Rico will go up against each other in the main game of the day.
Host Mexico, who are also the defending FIBA Americas champions, will put their clean slate on the line against the upset-conscious Puerto Rican squad. It should be noted, though, that Puerto Rico only won one game in the first round -- against Cuba, who went winless in the tournament this year.
The remaining eight teams were placed in one group and will face the teams that were drawn into the opposite group during the first round. After Day 4 of the second round, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals of this year's tournament.
