NFL Trade Rumors 2015: Kam Chancellor to Philaldelphia Eagles, New York Giants?
Seattle Seahawks' strong safety Kam Chancellor has not showed up the entire training camp and preseason because of a contract dispute. The four-time Pro Bowler is unhappy with his four-year, $28-million deal that he signed in 2013, as reported by 12th Man Rising.
According to the same report, the Seahawks are worried that they will set a bad example to the NFL if they give Chancellor a revised deal. Players around the league will probably begin asking for new and revised contracts.
There is no word if he is on the trading block, but in a report by NJ.com, the New York Giants are seriously interested and inquired about the 27-year-old safety. The report said that the talks are preliminary and expensive as it will likely cost the Giants two high draft picks.
Giants coach Tom Laughlin admitted last spring that the safety position is an issue. "That's an issue, no doubt. We do have one more access to bringing in personnel, obviously the draft. We have a couple guys in the program, Nat Berhe we really like as a rookie as a special-teamer. We have injured players coming back that hopefully will help. There is concern, no doubt," he said via a separate report from NJ.com,
Some of the Giants' safety options like Berhe was placed on the injured reserve due to calf surgery and Bennett Jackson tore his ACL last month, as reported by NJ.com. They also have Cooper Taylor and traded up to get rookie Landon Collins. Veterans Brandon Meriweather and Stevie Brown as were also signed and made the Giants initial 53-man roster.
In another report from NJ.com, the Philadelphia Eagles should try to trade for Chancellor. The Eagles are one of the best contending teams in the NFC and has the potential to be Super Bowl contenders especially if they add a player of Chancellor's caliber.
The Giants moved former Seahawks' cornerback Walter Thurmond to safety and excelled in his new role but left a big void at cornerback. Adding his former teammate would move Thurmond back to cornerback and the Eagles would improve on both positions.
The trade will be difficult to do for the Eagles as Chancellor would command more than two high draft picks. The Eagles don't have a second-round pick next year and would not want to start drafting in the third round in 2016.
According to NFL, the Seahawks are not willing to entertain trade talks, but several teams have showed interest. The Seahawks traded for Kansas City Chiefs' safety Kelcie McCray as a possible backup if they deal Kam Chancellor.
