Canon on Monday has announced its new camera sensor that encompasses the world's highest number of pixels, but small enough that it can fit into a consumer-grade DLSR camera. On its official website, Japan manufacturers revealed that photos captured from a distance of approximately 18 km. from the shooting location still rendered high quality resolutions.

Canon Japan on its website says the new sensor, called the APS-H-size (approx. 29.2 x 20.2 mm) sensor, is smaller than the size of a 35 mm full-frame sensor but still has the capacity to render photos with the maximum of 250 million pixels (19,580 x 12,600 pixels). Aside from being the densest sensor of its size, it is also fast.

According to manufacturers, the APS-H sensor has a read-out speed of 1.25 billion pixels per second. Usually, sensors with high-level of pixel count reportedly result to increased signal volume, which could, in turn, result to delays or slight inconsistencies in timing. However, the sensor's read-about speed works with the pixels to efficiently capture images in high-resolution with good noise performance despite the pixel count.

The company, on its website, said the sensor was able to read the lettering on the side of a moving plane flying 11 miles away from the shooting location. However, there was no mention of what lens the company used to take the photo.

Canon also announced on its page that the new APS-H sensor has the capacity to capture high resolution video at a speed of five frames per second.  

According to manufacturers, test results of the sensor on video captures yielded a high level of video resolution "that was approximately 125 times that of Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) video and approximately 30 times that of 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) video." The sensor makes it possible to really magnify video captures without the need to sacrifice clarity or image resolution.

Canon announced its new camera sensor technology could likely be utilized in specialized crime prevention and surveillance tools. Likewise, manufacturers of the APS-H-sensor aim to use the new technology in the field of visual expression and in industrial equipment, such as in ultra-high resolution measuring instruments.

The new sensor brings with it detailed imagery and photo realism, according to Cnet. With its high read-about speed and high pixel resolution, the APS-H- sensor can deliver high-quality images of moving or non-moving subjects even from a far shooting distance.
