WhatsApp has found itself on headlines for more reasons than one in the last few weeks and the most recent news is going to excite international users more than ever.

Just after the popular texting app was bought out by Facebook, it was reported that the application would soon introduce a voice chat option. This would align the application with Skype as the two could become significant competitors in the same market.

The company announced the plan to incorporate voice calling on Monday when Chief Executive Jan Koum spoke at the Mobile World Congress industry fair in Barcelona, Spain.

"We are driven by the mission that people should be able to stay in touch anywhere and affordably," Koum said.

WhatsApp could grow even more now that Facebook has taken the helm.

"Our mission is to make the world more open and connected," Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post on Feb. 19. "We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day."

Despite the fact that Facebook acquired the app, they won't be merging into one platform anytime soon, according to Zuckerberg.

"WhatsApp will continue to operate independently within Facebook," he also said in the letter. "The product roadmap will remain unchanged and the team is going to stay in Mountain View. Over the next few years, we're going to work hard to help WhatsApp grow and connect the whole world. We also expect that WhatsApp will add to our efforts forInternet.org, our partnership to make basic internet services affordable for everyone. "
