The franchise movement in Hollywood is on the rise now with Legendary Pictures making a move that would ensure that classic monsters King Kong and Godzilla will meet on the big screen, according to Deadline.

The two franchises are seeming to make a merge so that they can cash in on the booming "super" franchises that are currently taking the industry by storm, notably with Marvel and DC Comic brands.

The situation here is that now, "Kong: Skull Island," a prequel to the "King Kong" story and film, is currently in production. Legendary Pictures has decided to move that movie over to Warner Bros., which currently holds the rights to "Godzilla."

Once "Godzilla 2" comes out along with the "Kong" prequel, the two franchises will merge under the same roof and feature both monsters squaring off in an epic battle.

This is something that has been done before with the two classic movie monsters, but not quite with this much marketing power and this kind of technology. The move to Warner Bros. would essentially lay the necessary framework to merge the two for another pairing on film with independent standalone movies to etch out their own niches.

It is unclear at this time if the 2005 Peter Jackson film is in any way connected to the new "Kong" film. But if it is, then there is going to be quite a difference in time between the two universes, given that the last "Godzilla" movie took place in modern times and the last "Kong" film was during the Great Depression.

What's more, if "Skull Island" is a prequel, will it take place before the Great Depression? If so, it is unclear how the two will meet in time and space given the obvious differences.

"Skull Island" is supposed to be released on March 10, 2017.
