In 2008, the world got "Hellboy 2," a critically-praised movie directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Perlman in the lead role.

Del Toro was at his apotheosis as a director, slated for the "Hobbit" movies and lining up one project after another. However, the filmmaker, who has always had a knack for the fantastical, was not allowed one particular project -- the final piece in the "Hellboy" trilogy.

The saga has been ongoing for years and years, with the director telling Latinos Post that finance was a major problem.

"At the moment, there are no financial resources," he noted back in 2013. "We are working hard to get it done and I think with a little bit of luck, we will get the opportunity to make it."

The tune has not changed in any time since, with Perlman recently chiming in on the situation during an interview with IGN.

When asked whether the character could be resurrected on TV, he answered that the only time he would play the character is in the final part of the trilogy.

"Guillermo [del Toro] shared with me what the third and final instalment would look like and it's incredibly theatrical, it's highly charged, it's got huge dynamic to it and it's very cinematic," he told IGN. "And on top of that it's the deal we made with the public by making instalments one and two. Clearly we're not finished. We're not finished until we find out whether this guy's is going to meet his destiny or whether he's going to find a way to avoid it."

It is one of the great tragedies of the business that this particular trilogy, helmed by one of the industry's greatest creative geniuses, has yet to find fulfillment. But it is not the only project del Toro has struggled to get made. He left "The Hobbit" movies due to creative differences (and with all due respect to Peter Jackson and company, that was either a bad move or the best outcome for del Toro). He also had trouble getting "Mountains of Madness" off the ground and has now seen "Pacific Rim 2" delayed.
