Serena's Loss at 2015 US Open: Social Media Reaction
The tennis world seems to still be in recovery from the surprising loss from the U.S.'s returning champion. Serena Williams' chance at coming home with a Grand Slam was thwarted by Italian player Roberta Vinci in the Open semifinals. The score ended in 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and consequently sent social media into a frenzy.
The only one who appeared to not be upset about the outcome of the match was Vinci herself, who was thrilled amidst the backlash.
"For me it's an incredible moment. It's amazing. It's a dream," she said. "I'm in the final. I beat Serena. Sorry guys, sorry. . . It's the best moment of my life."
The unexpected loss led fans to point fingers at Williams' rumored new boyfriend and hip-hop star Drake. Whether his presence provided some form of distraction or bad luck charm, those in the social media sphere have convinced themselves that the platinum recording artist was the culprit.
"Drake is a Kentucky fan, UK loses. Drake is a Serena fan, Serena loses. Concidence? âª#ImJustSayingYouCouldDoBetter" asked Twitter user @Bballforeverfb.
"The Drake backlash right now is a sight to behold," added @chrislhayes.
"I'm not saying Venus should grab Drake and go for a walk. But she really should. I mean now. Not walk. Run. âª#JinxesAreRealPeople," said @MichelleDBeadle.
The rap artist appears to have some form of a black cloud following him at major sporting events, which leads fans to believe he is to blame for unexpected losses. It was even reported that Drake was denied access to the Miami Heat's locker room after the team's big championship win in 2013.
He was also recently blamed for the unfortunate career of Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel last season, and the upsetting Seahawks Super Bowl loss reported by the Washington Post.
The status of Williams and Drake's relationship is currently unconfirmed, seeing as the two exited the arena separately after the harsh loss. It's expected that they'll both avoid being spotted together for the time being.
