Disney's New Digital Cloud-Based Service Lets You Watch Movies Anywhere
After years of keeping fans wanting and waiting, Disney has finally launched their own digital cloud-based service.
The new service, called Disney Movies Anywhere, will allow consumers to purchase and download from a digital collection of over 400 Disney films. This extensive collection includes not only Disney's animated classics, but also live action films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, and films from Pixar and Marvel Studios' catalogue.
The app is being made available through a free app on Apple iOs devices. Once downloaded, users can view their purchases on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, as well as through Apple TV. They can also stream movies on the website, and users can sync their DMA accounts with ITunes to view previously purchased content.
This move has been long awaited as every other major studio has offered a similar service through the use of UltraViolet. Disney was offered the chance to join the popular digital cloud service two years ago but refused. Since then, DVD sales have dropped as consumers naturally moved towards digital content. The New York Times reports that digital film sales saw an increase by 47 percent just last year.
Disney's partnership with Apple (something UltraViolet lacks) is sure to help them towards success in the digital market. Apple leads in digital movie sales, controlling over two thirds of the market. Disney is also hopeful that it will expand its service to Android devices as well.
"Disney Movies Anywhere offers an exceptional consumer experience built around some of the most beloved and popular entertainment brands in the world," said Walt Disney studios president Alan Bergman. "This unique technology underscores Disney's commitment to meeting our consumers where they are with the content they want, and we're thrilled to debut with iTunes, the No. 1 digital media retailer in the world."
The launch coincides with the digital release of Disney's latest animated success, Frozen. New users will also be able to receive a free download of Pixar's The Incredibles for a limited time.
